MODEL DESCRIPTION: This model of the skull contains 267,992 10-noded tetrahedral elements and 155,254 nodes. Material properties are defined. Loads and constraints are described in the accompanying citation.
PROJECT: This model of a Jamaican Fruit Bat (Artibeus jamaicensis) was compared to a model of a Lesser Short-nosed Fruit Bat (Cynopterus brachyotis) to evaluate how loads applied during feeding are transmitted to the skull. There is less anatomical detail in this model compared to the Artibeus jamaicensis model used in Grosse et al., in press.
ORGANISM: A. jamaicensis is species of leaf-nosed bat (Family Phyllostomidae, Order Chiroptera) that is common throughout the neotropics.
CITATION: Dumont, E.R., J. Piccirillo, and I.R. Grosse. 2005. Finite element analysis of biting behavior and bone stress in the facial skeletons of bats. The Anatomical Record, 293:319-330.
